NIKKEI JADE SPIRIT, NEW YORK (AP) After an extended hiatus from the pool, a white jay swimsuit is now a reality.
The American Council of Life Insurers says the new white jaysuit, introduced in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, is “the first in the world that allows women to swim in public without fear of sexual harassment or assault.”
It was first rolled out in Australia in the summer of 2014 and is now in use in Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand and the United States.
The new swimsuits, which were rolled out during the Asian Games in Sapporo, Japan, last month, were designed to combat the problem of sexual assault.
The Council says the goal is to raise awareness of sexual violence and harassment in the U.S. and around the world, and that the new jaysuits are also meant to combat bullying.
A spokeswoman for the American Council for Life Insures says the swimsuits are meant to be a “first step” in addressing sexual harassment and assault.
A number of other companies have begun to produce swimsuits made of jade and other materials.
The swimsuits have been popular with celebrities like Beyoncé and Serena Williams, as well as athletes and politicians who have used them to cover their bodies in public.
The council said the new swimsuit will be available in stores from August 17 and online from August 18.
